Update 10/05/10

Yeah...time to update this again...

DJ SIDE:
Well...for those that never saw the note I posted on Facebook regarding Industry, here's the long and the short of it: it was fun. We had people come in that I have never seen before come in and have a great time. Herr Doktor played a great set, and everyone that came had a great time. That was what I was going for. And to those that came, my sincerest thanks. And thanks again to Anjela for being my door person...couldn't have done it without you!

However, the bar didn't break even, which didn't make the bar manager happy (and rightly so!)...and the good majority of people that said they'd be there were not there. Just to give you an idea of how important this was to me: if the numbers of Industry were really good, they were going to be given to someone who works at another bar downtown, and depending on the numbers, subsequent events might have been held there. However, that isn't going to be happening now. Nor, do I think, it'll be held at Club 1668 again, considering the low numbers. And despite the requests from people telling me I should try this again in February (this was never going to be a monthly event...MasQ already is a monthly event, and it was never my intention to compete with it!), and the fact that a friend of mine who attended, that works for a media firm, is willing to do promotions for it because they want to see it succeed...I dunno if this will be happening again...mostly because I forsee the exact same thing happening again, which, as you can imagine, does not make me confident of the event's success.

Aside from another wedding this month, I'll also be spinning at Hal-Con 2010 on the 29th for the masquerade ball! This should be a lot of fun! I'll also be providing music support for a bellydance event in November. More info when it becomes available.

RADIO/PODCAST SIDE:
I'm working on getting myself back onto Wolf Radio relatively soon. Mostly the delay is a logistical one, i.e. finding a regular place for the laptop I use for the broadcasts. Long story...but once I get that all straightened out, I should be back on the internet airwaves...providing I still have an audience...

PERSONAL SIDE:
As you can imagine, the whole thing surrounding Industry has seriously bummed me out. I haven't really wanted to be around people since that night. I feel like I've been really let down by the people whom I call my friends. It's making me doubt my desire to not only hold another event, but to even continue spinning music. At one point over the weekend, I considered just announcing that once all my professional obligations regarding DJing were finished, I would be hanging up the phones for good, selling the rig, and never doing it again. In a way, that's still in the back of my mind. I guess...depending on how I feel after November, I'll make my decision then. A lot of the things that are floating around in my head I can't put down in here because despite how this has seriously hurt me, I don't want to burn bridges. So for now, I'm keeping everything to myself...which includes not being online much anymore. Not until I feel like my presence is still wanted by everyone, because right now, it doesn't feel that way.

That's all. More later, if I feel like updating.

Update 09/22/10

Yeah...guess it's time to update this...

DJ SIDE:
Well...things are still rather busy on this side of things, which is always a good thing. This weekend, I'm playing some little retro music stints at Karaoke Cures II in Sackville (click on the link to see the Facebook event!), as well as spinning a little futurepop set to give folks a little taste of the lighter side of things they might hear at Industry on the 1st of October. I'm not exactly sure if any of the karaoke crowd will actually go to Industry...but...oh well...

Speaking of Industry, that kicks off a very busy month for me. After Industry, another wedding, and then Hal-Con 2010! I'm really looking forward to that. And in November, I'm spinning for Belindance...more details will be forthcoming soon. As well, I have a couple of as-yet announced events coming up next year...everything's still hush-hush right now...but they promise to be very fun indeed! And if Industry goes well, expect to see another Industry early next year!!

I have my name in for a couple of events as well...here's hoping... *crosses fingers*

RADIO/PODCAST SIDE:
I was originally supposed to get involved with CKDU for doing an industrial radio show on the FM airwaves...however, things have gotten kinda screwy with schedules (see "Personal Side" for that fustercluck). However...Wolf Radio has been reborn, and yours truly is going to be back on the internet airwaves to bring more great tunes! Just have to figure out the schedule before that happens...I'll be letting everyone know as soon as I can!

PERSONAL SIDE:
And now we come to the more down side of things. Those that have seen my status updates on FB know this week hasn't exactly been the best week for me. Firstly, I've had my eye on a Numark DJ rig that would essentially replace the one I currently have, mostly because this thing does everything except wash dishes...and I definitely must have it! Trouble is, the price recently jumped $200, and now it's definitely out of my price range. Which brings me to the second part of things. If the job I had been waiting to get had come through, the first part of this wouldn't have been so bad. However, since live seems fit to dump its crap on my head this week, it's not going to happen. I was supposed to get hired on with Iron Mountain for a job that was to go right up to (and possibly beyond) Christmas. However, the company has decided to pull the project...meaning I'm now without  a regular full-time job yet again. Both of these things, along with a couple of minor irritations, have managed to kill any kind of hopeful attitude I might have had. And both of these things happened within the first two days of this week. Needless to say, I'm anything but chipper. I'm still doing the regular job hunt in the mornings, but I'm not holding out much hope. And that puts a strain on everything here, which doesn't make me any happier, I can tell you. On top of the whole financial thing, I gave up the idea of working with CKDU and doing an industrial radio show there because I felt my supposed work schedule would interfere...and now I'm afraid to commit to anything like that for fear of not being able to have the proper time to give to it...and I know that I'm not going to getting a break anytime soon, hence my thinking that if there's more, then life should just dump it all on me now and get it over with...

Cheery, no?

Well, that's all there is right now...more as it happens...

Late-night thoughts...

I know...here I am, alone with my thoughts once more, listening to music. However, tonight is different, as it's not Massive Attack (yeah I know...what a twist!) Got iTunes cranking out the EBM/industrial/futurepop, so I'm in a different frame of mind tonight...fortunately for you ^_^

I've been thinking about the "scene," as it were...and how things have shifted to a seemingly superficial trend, as of late. Now I'm not exactly against self-promotion at all, being a DJ, but too often lately the scene has been filled with people who are far more concerned about fashion than the music. This is definitely a sad turn of events, though I know this isn't exactly a recent development by any stretch. I saw a lot of it at Kinetik Festival this year. There were people there for the sole purpose of getting seen by people wearing expensive outfits, but these people weren't attending any of the performances. Seriously...what's the point of going to a festival like Kinetik, and not watching the bands kick ass on stage?

I didn't notice it as much last year, but then again it was my first one, and I was too excited to care, to be honest. This year was different, as I'd already experienced the chaos, so I was a little more observant.

For me, it's always been about the music. Being a DJ, it's our job to introduce music to the masses, and entertain them at the same time. That's my favorite part of doing what I do. Nothing better than laying down a brand new track for the crowd and watching them dancing their asses off. I could care less if the crowd are dressed to the nines or in comfy clothes. Yes, I admit it's kinda neat to see the outfits people wear, 'specially if they're pretty (who doesn't like looking at eye candy?)...but it's not my primary concern. But there are people that will get dressed to the nines and not even nod their heads to the music. They're there to draw attention to themselves...well, more importantly, the clothing they're wearing, and how much better-looking they are than everyone else.

When did EBM/industrial become a fashion show? This is what I wanna know. It's gotten to the point where the mainstream & EBM/industrial scenes are almost exactly the same, just the brand names are different. Lip Service, Tripp NYC, New Rock...whatever brand is popular or more expensive, that's what becomes the trend. Now yes, I do wear Tripp jeans...for me, it's not a status thing. Tripp jeans are durable, long-lasting, and happen to fit my particular style. If I could make them myself, I'd do that and stop buying my stuff. However, I'm not that talented.

I know there's been talk recently slamming all the people that wear goggles, masks and the like. And yes, I do wear goggles and masks...but not every time, and usually only when I'm performing, because it creates a specific atmosphere that fits the music I'm playing, not just because it's trendy to do so. And the masks I wear are personally modified...I don't buy an already-scene-ready mask...mostly because I like personalizing them, and making them unique. I like the whole DIY aspect of what I wear. Perhaps if people spent more time making their own accessories than spending scads of cash on brand-name items churned out for the sole purpose of making money, things might be different. Well...I can dream...

Bottom line: people need to remember that without the music, there would be no inspiration for the clothing that's become so important in the scene. I think we need to get back to basics.

I think that's enough ranting for one night. Time for bed, methinks.

An update 08/25/10

Time again to update this thing ^_^

DJ SIDE:
I'm sure many of you have seen the event posting I put up in the wee hours of the morning. INDUSTRY. A night of EBM, industrial & futurepop. This was the thing I was talking about, but couldn't say much about. Now all the promotion that goes with putting on an event like this begins. On top of this, I'm now right into the busy part of DJing for the year, which came as a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one. Between all the shows, weddings, and appearances with Necrobilia...yeah, it's gonna be busy...just the way I like it! There's also a couple of other things in the works...but much like INDUSTRY, they're under wraps until everything is ready ^_^

The old-school goth/industrial MasQ on the 13th of August was incredible! Such a great turnout! So nice to work with some seasoned pros on stage! Next month, on Sept. 25th, the retro/new wave MasQ will be held at Club 1668! Keep watching Facebook for the event listing!!

RADIO SIDE:
Yesterday I put yet another plan into motion...something that brings together radio and the INDUSTRY event. More on that as it happens.

PERSONAL SIDE:
As you can imagine, stuff's gotten serious. I think I'm actually busier now than I've ever been...and I couldn't be happier With all the DJing, and the Necrobilia shows, and a few other secret projects coming up...

I'm still looking for work, but with the weddings, it's helped a lot with things. Regular, steady work would be very much appreciated. I've even been looking at the idea of working part-time someplace...anything would be good right now.

I've set things in motion with my teeth as well...gonna get the last of it done this year. Am I looking forward to getting it done? Not really...but it has to be done...and then there's not a lot to worry about, aside from training myself on how to eat with a full set of dentures. But then the pain and crap associated with having the teeth I have will be gone...finally...

That's about it for now...there will be a Necrobilia blog post coming VERY soon, so stay tuned...

Update 08/01/10

Who'da thunk it...updating my blog so soon?

DJ SIDE:
For those that might be wanting me to spin for events and parties and such...if you're going to book me for anything, now is the time to do so. My life has become rather busy as of late, with all the DJ gigs and Necrobilia shows this year. Not wanting to sound snarky, but waiting until the last minute is not a good idea.

Here's a brief rundown of what's going on:

08/07 - wedding reception
08/14 - fashion show for Works Of The Weird
08/21 - mini-vacation
09/04 - wedding reception
09/24 - Karaoke Cures II
10/22 - wedding reception
10/29 - Hal-Con (DJ & Necrobilia)
11/27 - spinning for Belindance
12/18 - Have Yourself A Gothic Little Christmas (Necrobilia)

So yeah...getting really busy. The secret project is happening within the non-busy times...again, I'll be letting everyone know...

RADIO/PODCAST SIDE:
No change here as of yet. Again, when it starts up, I'll be letting everyone know.

PERSONAL SIDE:
I feel like, once again, my friends are leaving me out of the loop, or ignoring me, or deciding I'm not worth the effort to hang around. Of course, I don't mean the people that don't live near me...I'm talking about people in the local area. People who used to invite me out to hang out have completely stopped talking to me. I'm getting the hint.

I'm soon ready to shut myself away from everyone, save for professional commitments. I've threatened to do that before, and something always drags me back into the social circle. This time...I'm not so sure there will be anything that can, save for the aforementioned professional commitments.

Update 07/18/10

Y'know...I keep telling myself I need to update this thing more often...and every time I think about it, I get distracted...like I just did a while ago...

Several downloads & many rounds of online games later, we're going to try this again...*le sigh*

DJ SIDE:
I recently did a set at "Through The Looking Glass," and the reception was quite surprising, to be honest. I wasn't sure the crowd were going to warm up to some pounding industrial/EBM/noise...but they did! Thanks to Mitch and the gang for putting that one on, despite some technical hitches, and Mother Nature testing our resolve!

As some of you already know, MasQ is on hiatus for a while. Not sure exactly when it'll be back (September, I think, was the stated return)...but thankfully, I have some gigs coming up in the interim ^_^

In August, I'll be spinning for the fashion show portion of Works of the Weird on the 14th @ Bus Stop Theatre. I'm hoping this will be a repeat event. In late September I'm donating my time to Karaoke Cures II, a 24-hour karaoke marathon to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. I was there last year, and it was a blast...this year should be even better! I'm also hoping to be spinning at another event earlier in the month...no word yet, but I'll keep you posted ^_^ There's a couple of weddings in there as well, and, of course, Hal-Con 2010 on Halloween weekend! Don't want to miss that!!

Oh yes...the project in the works that I mention from time to time...there are a select few that know the details right now, and that's how it's staying for the time being...more to come soon...

RADIO/PODCAST SIDE:
I got word recently that Wolf Radio (formerly Fallen Sword Radio) is shutting down. I feel bad that I haven't been doing my regular radio shows, but again, with the unreliable nature of my internet connection to do a two-hour show, I'm unable to do anything live at the moment. When things here get more stable, I'll begin the regular podcasts, and recording more radio shows to be farmed out to a few different EBM net radio stations. I'll keep you posted.

PERSONAL SIDE:
As I write this, I'm looking at a disaster area...of my own doing...kinda. I'm going to be moving almost everything out of the computer room in the next few days or so to get ready for reno's to be done to the wall. What's wrong with it? Not sure...but I'm thinking it has to do with insulation in the walls...we'll see. I won't be offline during that time, but my online time may be more sporadic. Not too sure yet.

Necrobilia is really taking off, which is so very cool! We have three shows this fall/winter, and we're really excited about them! For more information on that, visit us on Facebook, or check out our official blog!

I'm still unemployed, which is really bringing me down. I've had a couple people give me some good leads on jobs, which I'll be going after this week, as well as looking at some part-time jobs. I'm really hoping things pick up in the fall with students going back to school. *crosses fingers*

I've really become domestic over the last few weeks. Seeing as I'm not working regularly, I'm doing all the housework through the day, which means Andrea doesn't have to lift a finger to clean anything...something, as you might imagine, she's overjoyed about. I like to keep her happy ^_^

It's been two years since my mother passed away from brain tumors. I actually dreamt the other night I was talking to her about everything. It was really surreal, but it felt like it was actually happening. Comforting, in a way...

I'm liking not having long hair. I wasn't sure if I was going to, but seeing as it's now shorter than it's every been, I really do like it. I don't think it'll ever be dyed again, and I still don't think it'll ever be as long as it was. I'm still debating the idea of just shaving it all off, really...the jury's still out on that one...

I think that's it...I'm sure there's something else I've forgotten, but it can't be that important if I can't think of it at the moment.

Thanks for reading...more as it happens ^_^

Early-morning rant...

It's been a while since I've been ticked off enough to write a rant...but I'm awake at almost twenty after four...and even though this will not change a thing...it needs to be said...

Don't worry...this isn't about anyone in particular...

As some of you know, I'm a DVD collector. The library here at the house is huge, just with my own collection alone. When you add Andrea's to it...it's massive. As such, I'm a big fan of the special/limited/collector's editions of movies. As I write this, I turn around to see a bust of Jack Skellington stare back at me...the bust, of course, is the ltd. ed. of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The huge "Book of Shadows," which is the entire Charmed series (which, interestingly, is Andrea's ^_^ ). You get the idea...

One of my big interests with DVD releases are the special features. I'm a huge fan of the behind-the-scenes segments, blooper reels, SFX breakdowns, etc. With the sets I have, they're very rich with those, which makes me a happy Bludston. However, there's been a more common trend happening...

...and that is the movie companies releasing all the special features on Blu-Ray ONLY...and putting nearly SFA on regular DVD releases. Case-in-point: we picked up the new Alice In Wonderland DVD tonight. Since Andrea's not a big fan of behind-the-scenes segments (though she'll watch 'em if they're on), it wasn't that big of a deal to her. But on the back, I looked at the featurettes: there are three...and they're pretty good. However, I looked on the back of the Blu-Ray release...there are over TWELVE!!!

As you may have guessed, I'm one of those backwards-thinking people that haven't switched to Blu-Ray.

To quote Peter Griffin, "what really grinds my gears" is the fact that the DVD companies are forcing collectors to switch to Blu-Ray...which includes me. Yes, I know BD has fantastic picture & sound...and it does. I'm not going to take anything away from that. However, what I don't agree with is that you can only get the really good features on BD, and they're short-changing the people who are still using regular DVDs. It's seriously putting me off of buying movies, and I normally LOVE buying DVDs. Another example that comes to mind: Disney's "Surrogates." Not everyone likes this movie...and for this, you don't need to be a fan. The BD release has tons of special features...and the regular DVD release has NONE!!! WTF??!?!?

The only other thing that "grinds my gears" about buying DVDs are getting a collector's edition...and finding out 6 months later, they release an even more deluxe edition! According to things I've read online, they're finally releasing Star Wars on BD sometime this year...with MORE footage added to "A New Hope"...and NO word on a regular DVD release...WTF??!? And all the extras that are on the BD version of the extended editions of "Lord Of The Rings" that aren't on the regular release...this is totally ridiculous!! If they were willing to release single/multiple supplement discs with the extra features to registered owners of the original discs, I wouldn't be so bothered by this whole thing...but they don't give a damn about those of us that don't feel the need to jump on the Blu-Ray bandwagon, considering the industry's penchant for finding new technology around the time that everyone switches to the current trend, making it completely obsolete!

Almost makes me want to download all my movies...'cause if I'm not able to get the special features on DVD, what's the point?

Update 05/26/10

Ummm yeah...seriously needs some updating here...

DJ SIDE:
I was supposed to be competing in Breakout Thursdays last week, which was two days after coming home from Kinetik Festival (more on that on the Personal Side)...but the late nights, busy days, travel, mood, and just not feeling well...all that, coupled with the notion that I wouldn't have had any real support from anyone that night...yeah...I canceled. I loathe canceling any kind of DJ gig...but it needed to be done.

However, that didn't stop me from having a great time spinning at MasQ's two-year anniversary! Glenn Love put on a great performance, as he usually does, and it was great to have the crowd on their feet during my set. No real clue what next month's theme will be...but I'm sure it'll be posted on Facebook soon enough...keep your eyes peeled!

And speaking of next month...I have a project I start working on. A VERY select few know what this may be...the rest of you will find out in the coming months. And yes, I'm being purposely secretive and vague right now...'cause if it happens, it'll be big...and if it doesn't, you won't miss what you don't know ^_^

RADIO/PODCAST SIDE:
Thanks to an idea that I got whilst journeying through the web, I've come up with a new system of advertising my DJ mixes & podcasts. What that is exactly...well, that's another little trick up my sleeve. But it won't be for long...you'll hafta stay tuned ^_^

PERSONAL SIDE:
And now we come to the big part of the blog...MY KINETIK TRIP!!!

You may wonder why there are no pics in this blog...well, they all got posted on my Facebook profile...they're all in an album naturally called "Kinetik 2010"...easy to find ^_^

This year, Andrea and I had out friend Andee come with us, which was like seeing the festival through new eyes...we had an absolute blast!

We decided to fly to Montreal this time, as opposed to taking the train. The big deciding factors were simple: 1.5 hr plane ride compared to a 20+hr train trip, and the plane trip was paid for with Air Miles. Going through security at the airport in Halifax was routine, though I gave the guy with the metal scanner a coronary when he was scanning me...I was wearing my Tripp jeans...LOTS of metal rings ^_^

We got into Montreal without incident, and cabbed to the Grand Plaza Hotel on Sherbrooke. The hotel was about a 10 minute walk from Usine C, which was the venue for Kinetik...meaning lots of exercise ^_^ However...as per usual, we ended up doing what we said were WEREN'T going to do this year, which was do a lot of walking during the day, and then standing around watching the bands at night. Needless to say, some of us needed to buy insoles by the middle of the festival @_@

The bands performing gave some absolutely incredible performances...for those that didn't get to go, I seriously recommend going next year, as I believe it's going to be even bigger than it was this year...likewise, this year was so much bigger than last year. I could give you a night-by-night commentary, but describing the performances pales in comparison to actually being there. Some of the more notable performances: The Gothsicles, Leaether Strip, Combichrist, Nachtmahr, Covenant, Rotersand, Terrorfakt, FGFC820 (always great to see them live!), SAM, Komor Kommando (so kewl to finally see Nate & Seb do their thing live!), Melotron...all in all, a wonderful experience!

Some of the more memorable moments of the festival actually took place outside of the main hall. Getting to hang with Seb Komor this year was great, seeing Nature and talking shop with him was very much a push in the right direction for something that is in the works (mentioned previously). Meeting a lot of new people, as well as seeing old friends & acquaintances. Hearing some of the DJs play some great sets in the cafe...DJs like End: the DJ (who never disappoints!) and getting to hear R-Lex play again, which was awesome! The only real downer was when Rev. John from Das Bunker thought it might be "funny" to do an entire hip-hop set...and BAAAAAD hip-hop, to boot. Yeah...kinda surprised no one actually lynched him...oh well...

And more CDs were bought, which seems to be the norm for me...I came home with a motherload of CDs last year too...and this year was no exception. One of the best things about this festival is being able to rub elbows with the bands that are performing at the festival. So many of them not only have tons of fans to see them, they're also there to see the other bands perform, which I think is so very cool...like everyone is everyone else's fan ^_^

I also got to get more pictures taken this year...and there are a LOT of pics that haven't been posted on Facebook...waaaaay too many to post. I don't have room for them all...but they're here ^_^

We also ran into our friend Doc in Montreal, who was also there for the festival. So we had a little posse for a lot of it. We also made time to visit with our friend Craig, and Doc's friend Margaret...want to Schwartz's for some VERY yummy smoked meat. No point going to Montreal without stopping there ^_^ We also got to have some delicious dim sum with Paul Ash, and make a return visit to Chinatown. I love that place ^_^

Coming back from Montreal had the same effect it did last year...I didn't want to leave. I did, however, come to a small revelation that made coming back easier. If I had actually moved to Montreal, I'd be loving the energy of the city for a good while. However, I'd be afraid of becoming used to it, and the whole novelty of it would be lost. I kinda had that happen when I moved to Kansas City...though admittedly, I miss KC as well...and I really want to go back to visit people.

And that's the trip in a nutshell.

Necrobilia has been busy, but if you wanna know what we're been up to, check out the Necrobilia blog or the Necrobilia FB page!

As for things with me personally...I've felt very disconnected from people as of late. And yes, I've said it before that I feel left out of things, but it's really been bad recently. I have a friend that's leaving Halifax soon, and never even got invited to her going-away dinner. Things going on all around me with friends, and I'm not even included. Now that I'm back from my trip, and MasQ is done with, it may be time to withdraw from everyone again...I begin to wonder, sometimes, if anyone would really notice if I vanished. I can think of one person that might...I don't think anyone else would miss me if I did.

Sorry to end this blog on a downer...but it's how I feel...

I'll update this again when there's something worth posting...
