PART ONE

The recipe book lay open on a dirty table, covered with a white, caustic powder with silver shavings.
She opened a giant bottle of glycerin and poured it into a small vial, then opened a drawer and took out a small gift jar with purple crystals at the bottom. Thoughts were confused, but she tied them into a knot, folded the scratched movie poster into an envelope, shoveled up the white powder, a bottle, a jar and ran out into the street.

In a hurry, and already far from home, she realized that she had forgotten to put on socks and hard shoes pricked her feet. The glittering city drew a wheel of fortune in the sky and lit her face with garlands of windows. Some strange words came to mind that sounded like a child's counting-rhyme...
