Mission Europe!

Mission Berlin is hilarious.

It's a podcast/audio production. Designed to teach German, but I'm pretty sure it's pretty understandable even if you don't know any German going in. (Coproduced by Deutsche Welle, Polskie Radio and Radio France Internationale with the support of the European Union.)

It's a computer game. Kind of. It's a recording of a player, Spieler, playing a computer game. Only he interacts with the main character, Anna, telling her what to do and translating the German she doesn't speak.

It's a spy-type mission, where Anna is trying to stop those who want to hinder Germany's reunification the destruction of Berlin. And there's time-travel. And obscure clues. And it's fun!

My favorite moments are probably when Spieler (the player) gets annoyed with Anna for flirting with another character in the game. It's very amusing.

A quote:
"ANNA: What? Is the priest suggesting a voyage in time???
SPIELER: Yes! You must go back to 1961. That's where the solution is: In der Teilung liegt die Lö- sung.
ANNA: The message on the mirror. So the solution is in the division. The division of Berlin. The construction of the wall which was in the past.
SPIELER: Everything depends on that! So off you go to 1961!
ANNA: Hang on, hang on a second ... there's one thing I don't quite get. Die Vergangenheit, that's feminine and die Maschine, that’s feminine, too?
SPIELER: Exactly.
ANNA: So why do they say "in der Vergangenheit" – in the past and with the machine – "mit der Maschine"?
SPIELER: Good point. With prepositions "in" or "mit" you change the definite article.
ANNA: And I'm changing time. Going back 45 years …? This is scary!"

I'm currently at episode 16 of 26.

There's also Mission Paris and Misja Kraków for teaching French and Polish. I plan to listen to those next. They use different heroines (Eva and Suzanna), and different plots. Sound like fun.
