SSL UF1 - compact controller for DAW

Solid State Logic expands its lineup of controllers such as the UC1 and UF8 with the release of the UF1, a compact solution for controlling your DAW environment. Requires installation of free SSL 360° software that supports PCs running Windows 10 or later or macOS 10.15 or later.

The novelty has a solid metal body and is equipped with a single fader, two high-resolution LCD displays, soft rubber buttons, encoders and a special section with a weighted jog wheel. A large multi-purpose rotary encoder has features such as channel merging, mouse wheel emulation, and volume control, while five smaller encoders provide DAW mixer control and plug-in parameters.

It is stated that the extra row of keys above the main Transport controls can be configured to provide access to key functions, including loop and click options, or used with the Shift key to switch automation modes. It is noted that the device is able to simultaneously control three DAWs via HUI or MCU and comes with profiles for Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Studio One, Ableton Live, LUNA and Pyramix. It is worth noting that the UF1 can be combined with the UF8 and UC1 SSL units to form an extended control surface, and up to four UF8s can be used with the UC1 and UF1, allowing for a system setup with up to 33 faders.

In addition, the 4.3-inch display offers integration with the SSL Meter plug-in (perpetual license included with purchase of the UF1), and also allows users to display the following range of measurement tools: Peak, RMS, K-System, 31-band RTA, VU, PPM, Stereo Balance, Phase Correlation and Lissajous Phase Scopes.

The SSL UF1 will be available for purchase in June 2023 for around $600. In addition to a perpetual license for the SSL Meter plug-in, users will receive a six-month trial of the SSL Complete subscription package.

Boss ME-90

Boss releases a versatile stompbox-style pedal that expands the ME series.

It reportedly combines amplifier modeling and impulse response loading with a number of effects derived from the company's professional GT-1000 device . Users are offered 11 amp models and the ability to upload up to three custom speaker impulse response files using a dedicated software application.

Equipped with eight footswitches for quiet and smooth operation, the unit also offers a built-in expression pedal, while 30 knobs on the top panel provide extensive hands-on control over key parameters. In addition, users have access to a footswitch recall mode for all patch settings, and a mode with direct on/off control for each effect category within a patch, similar to using a standard pedalboard setup with separate stompboxes.

The ME-90 is claimed to come with 60 effects divided into categories, including a range of drive, modulation, delay and reverb processors (each with its own dedicated control sections). In turn, connections are provided for additional processors to send and return an external effects loop. It is noted that when using external effects, you can place the loop before or after the stage of modeling the amplifier. Switching options include TRS connectors: two outputs (LR/MONO), one input, SEND, RETURN; 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C port.

Other features include power from the mains or four AA batteries, the ability to work as an audio interface when connected to a PC, access to additional features through the Boss Tone Studio software (available on Mac and Windows).
