DJ Julia Katana /Radio Record/

The Katana is a curved Japanese sword. The katana originated in the 14th century. A lot was written in an exalted strain about the combat merits of the samurai swords. The katana was an expensive ritual weapon. It took much time and efforts to make this sword. The authentic, properly forged and polished katana used to be and still is a very dangerous weapon, especially in hands of the professional.

«The energy of music concentrates on the tips of my fingers, passes through the mixer and across the wires to the acoustic system. Like a delirious wave music covers the dance floor. I watch people dancing, they all move to the same rhythm like a single entity. Their eyes are glittering, they smile, raise their hands, sing along, clap their hands to the music. They are happy and free beyond space and time…I am also the part of that entity and I am happy. For me it is the highest appraisal and greatest delight”.

The katana is a dangerous weapon. It is a sacred Japanese sword that was glorified for centuries by the samurai movie sagas of Akira Kurosawa and Takeshi Kitano. And finally it was turned into a stylish legend by the efforts of Uma Thurman and Quentin Tarantino in the legendary “Kill Bill”. DJ Julia Katana is a samurai of the modern electronic house music. Her battle field is a dance floor. In her hands music is a powerful weapon, you can trust me. With the help of her main weapon – music- she brings people joy, happiness and good mood. A bad peace is better than a good war. She is beautiful, sexy, charming, emotional. She is a small bridge between two cultures – Russia and Japan. She loves music and night dance floor with her whole heart. Her music is stylish, exotic and unpredictable. Like she herself. It’s all we need for energy and good mood.

DJ Julia Katana. A DJ, Fashion model, official ambassador of Japanese culture in Russia. As a DJ she works with the most different formats of commercial dance house music. Basic style: Progressive House. Favourite styles: Disco House, Easy Listening, Electro House, House, Progressive Trance, Techno, Trance, Vocal House.

She started her musical career in far-away Japan. Since 2002 she works in the modeling agency in the capital of Japan Tokyo. For a long time she studied the Japanese language, customs and traditions of this country that was reflected later in her onstage image and the music that she plays. Her bright, capturing and creative performances are always dynamic, fascinating and unforgettable shows.

“I’m in love with house music. I know some DJs that play only what is fashionable, though they like some other music. I always play what I like. When you try to choose music it’s always interesting to see the reaction of the listeners. I don’t know if it seems strange to you but my music tastes are constantly changing. The only irreplaceable thing is a positive energy in every composition...”

Within the framework of the Russian-Japanese cultural project Japan Premium Project that started in 2008 and the program of cultural exchange between Russia and Japan the head of the PR-agency in Tokyo, businessman and Julia’s friend Yasushi Koyanagi offered the Russian model to try herself on the stage and to perform as a DJ in this project. Julia agreed and under the guidance of the popular Japanese DJ, soundman and emcee of Tokyo dance radio stations DJ Murakami in the shortest possible time (it took her only a month) she studied the secrets of the new profession.

“At first it seemed to me, as it may seem to any person not familiar with DJ tricks, that everything is very simple and easy. And I agreed. But when they told my teacher Murakami that he should teach me playing and we had only a month, he had quite a turn. He was sure that nothing would result from this and gave me lessons without any enthusiasm. I speak Japanese but I didn’t understand terms that he used trying to explain me the process. He doesn’t speak English and I just nodded without understanding what he was trying to explain. Then when I was left alone with the mixer I tried to grasp everything myself...”

Her first appearance as a DJ was on March 1, 2008 in the Japanese club @WAREHOUSE. She played together with the fashionable Japanese DJ Numanoid aka DJ Tsuyoshi that lives now in London. Julia’s set was an unusual, exotic, merry and dynamic performance made in the traditional Japanese style. Success came to Julia after her first performance. Presentations and invitations to such Tokyo clubs as Le Baron de Paris, Saza*e, Camelot, Ever where Julia plays with such celebrities as DJ Hatori, DJ from Peek-A-Boo, John Wayyne & Will2Live, 2Boy (Milk Boy), DJ Shin prove her success. When she successfully passed her first musical exam within the framework of Japan Premium Project DJ Julia Katana got an honorable invitation to be the ambassador of Japanese culture in Russia.

In spring 2008 DJ Julia Katana participated in a new unusual Japanese project in the framework of Japan Premium Project and played on the stage of the largest Tokyo concert hall with the Russian quartet of the violin players Prima Stella. The quartet’s live concerts had a wild success in the largest cities of Japan.

“I like different music. I never limit myself with some frames, styles and trends. I have never had any idols. I think you can find a good song that you are sure to like no matter what group or performer played it. I also like classic music – everything is based on the contrast, but something should be for pleasure. I don’t believe that there can be too much of a good thing. We should try to find something new all the time. You can ask me what the connection between music and fashion is. I think it is beauty. It connects fashion and music. I like beautififul music…”

Her performances with traditional Japanese motives attract more and more admirers and in July 2008 the magazine DJ100 Girls includes DJ Julia Katana in the TOP100 list of the best female DJs of the world. Then the cosmetic company Doctor Ci-Labo chooses Julia to be a model for their line «Labo Labo».

On September 13, 2008 DJ Julia Katana returned to Russia and performed in the fashionable dance club Extravaganza in her native city Rostov with support from her good friend and the club’s favourite DJ Gariy. After her performances on the popular dance floors of Rostov Pyany Joker and Vozdukh she continued touring some clubs of the country. She had successful performances in New Rome (Stavropol), Aurum (Eysk), Arena (Saint Petersburg). On November 21, 2008 in Saint Petersburg DJ Julia Katana together with another ambassador of culture, popular Russian singer Julia Savicheva opened the project Japan Premium Project – Arts & Events and the Days of Japan in Russia.

“They should attract attention to our project. They are leaders among their admirers. Julia Savicheva and DJ Julia Katana will give concerts and performances that should raise interest to the Japanese culture in Russia” (producer of the project Yuske Konishi).

“Katana is a samurai sword, a beautiful weapon. This pseudonym appeared in Japan, when I started playing I was known simply as DJ Julia. It was a difficult task to find such name that wound sound good both in Russian and in Japanese. My character is quite different; I am not a sakura or “kawaii” (a word popular in Japan, usually used to describe charming and sweet soft toys). And the music that I play is not “kawaii”. So that was how DJ Julia Katana appeared.”

“What further development in music do I want? Now I am slowly turning away from the fashion business because it distracts me from music. About my plans… I’d like to reach Moscow and to conquer it. I don’t want to become a resident DJ of any club, I am afraid of daily routine. But to understand if I need it I must try. I would like to travel, to meet interesting and creative people. I am a native Rostovite but I was born in the city of Eastern Germany Weimar, the birth place of the great poet Schiller. Since my childhood I got used to moving. That is why when I stay for a long time in one place it seems to me that something has happened, something is wrong… Unfortunately so far I don’t write music myself but I am going to try it. Music with Japanese archaic tunes and modern fashionable European sound. I `d like to release my own disc. I think we should use all the chances that our life gives us. Don’t understand people who idle their time away waiting for something to happen. My secret is that I feel good when others feel good. That is why I like to raise people’s spirits. I can hardly feel happy if someone of my friends or relatives is blue. The greatest happiness for me is when I can influence emotional state of people.”
