Nu Disco

Nu disco is a modern dance music genre associated with a renewed interest in the 70s disco and Euro disco synth aesthetics.

Birth: 2002 Bloom: 2008

«Nu» is used to separate the genre from the traditional disco conception and create an independent sub-style. «Nu» became a quite independent term in 2002 when The Independent described it as «the result of applying modern technology to the 70s disco and funk».

In 2008 the term «nu-disco» was widely used by Internet shops Juno and Beatport for describing «the symbiosis that springs from the late 1970s and early 1980s: disco, boogie, cosmic disco, Italo disco, Balearic; from European music inspired by American disco». Nu disco is also released by several American record labels that were earlier associated with elecroclash and deep house. The leading label of commercial electronics Hed Kandi played the enormous role in the popularization of nu disco. But searching for the «right» nu disco sound usually is referred to the Permanent Vacation`s catalog.

Just for several years the style got its own big stars, profile blogs, recognizable style of cover design and even subcultural appearance of artists and fans (distinctive clothes, shoes or hairstyles). A nu disco fan can easily be recognized in the crowd of techno or house fans. The style returned the lost brightness, gloss, freakiness, and naivety to the dance culture.

Among the most notable artists of this style attention should be paid to Madeon, Aeroplane, Simian Mobile Disco, Chromeo, Miami Horror, Breakbot, Cut Copy, Grum and the Russian group Tesla Boy.
